Microstructural Characteristics and Mechanical Properties of Cast Mg–3Nd–3Gd–xZn–0.5Zr Alloys

The microstructure, aging behavior and mechanical properties of cast Mg–3Nd–3Gd–xZn–0.5Zr (x = 0, 0.5, 0.8, 1 wt%) alloys are investigated in this work. Zn–Zr particles with different morphologies form during solution treatment due to the additions Zn. As Zn content increases, number density also increases. Microstructural comparisons peak-aged studied indicate that varying could profoundly influence competitive precipitation behavior. In Zn-free alloy, β′′ phases key strengthening precipitates. When 0.5 wt% is added, besides precipitates, additional fine β1 precipitates form. With addition 0.8 Zn, 0.8Zn alloy characterized by predominantly prismatic scanty basal precipitate distributions. enhanced should be primarily attributable presence increased dispersoids. further increases wt%, markedly enhanced. Basal 1Zn alloy. Tensile tests reveal relatively best tensile achieved addition, whose yield strength, ultimate strength elongation 179 MPa, 301 MPa 5.3%, respectively.
